The history of free speech in danger
The growing use of line casting machines and other printing equipment in early years of 20th century, opened for developing the right to free speech as a vital part of the democracy. Newspapers could easier produce more pages, with long articles and exchange of political views. Letterpress technology went out of commercial use late in the 20th century, and it is now a “Heritage at Risk”. In Røros, at the Press Museum Fjeld-Ljom, we try to preserve the heritage, and invites in September to an international symposium, discussing these challenges.
